Educational Books for Pacific Islands

Johnsonville Rotary was pleased to assist in arranging the delivery of 60 cartons of reading books for Niue Primary Early Childhood development collected and donated by local resident, Jan Jones.

New Zealander Jan Jones was inspired to collect the books after living in Rarotonga with her husband having taught there for many years. While there she saw the critical need that pre-schools and primary schools had for more resources and so started collecting books.

NZ High Commissioner to Niue, Helen Tunnah presented the books to the teachers and students and hopes the books would be a colorful and informative addition to their school Library.

“The books are really good quality and we are so grateful to Jan Jones and the Rotary Club of Johnsonville for the donation, ” said Ms Tunnah. She adds that sometimes its nice to put the tablet down and read a book and read as a family or a group.

Niue Primary School Teacher-Sialefai Simelika was grateful for the donation and was certain the students would be keen in reading the collections of children’s books soon.

The books had initially been scheduled to be delivered to Rarotonga but due to unforeseen circumstances, the resources ended up in Niue. Through the assistance of The Rotary Club of Johnsonville, the books were brought in by the Royal NZ Navy boat HMNZS Manawanui.

About 1500 books in total were donated to the school.
