50-Year Celebration of the Rotary Club of Johnsonville, and its Changeover

On Monday 26 June 2017, Johnsonville Rotary celebrated its 50 years since it was Chartered on 15 April 1967, and had its changeover of president.

The celebration was held in the Johnsonville Club and attended by 74 guests, including the Mayor, Justin Lester, Ohariu MP the Hon. Peter Dunne, and the Rotary District 9940 Governor, Martin Garcia.

The evening was also the official launch of the latest Onslow Historical Society’s publication: “50 Years: Rotary Club of Johnsonville: 1967-2017”, by Judy Siers.

There are 3 known surviving Founding members of Johnsonville Rotary, Arthur Avis and Neil Malaghan, who gave their apologies because they were both overseas at the time, and Dr Roger Ridley-Smith who attended the celebration.

The evening commenced with social time, for guests to mix and mingle.

Mayor Justin Lester, the Hon. Peter Dunne MP & Rotary District 9940 Governor Martin Garcia, congratulated Johnsonville Rotary on an outstanding 50 years of service to our community.

Martin Garcia also presented Pres. Vince Adams-Schneider with a certificate and letter of congratulations from the World President of Rotary International.

All the speakers, including Michael Hodgen (for Arthur Avis) and the Onslow Historical Society publication, highlighted how much Johnsonville Rotary had achieved in its 50 Years, including initiating, supporting and seeing to fruition the Keith Spry Pool and the current Johnsonville Community Centre. The Club also started the Johnsonville Senior Citizens Club and four Probus Clubs in the area; supported numerous charities and worthy causes, and many youth initiatives (ranging from Rotary leadership training to Outward Bound).

Incoming President William Nobelen was made a Paul Harris Fellow by the Club as recognition of his service to the community, including the “Healthy Heroes” programme he ran in local schools.

Pres. Vince also gave the President’s award to Christine Crewdson for her service, including as Club Treasurer.

Finally, outgoing President Vince passed over the President’s chain to incoming Johnsonville Rotary President, William Nobelen.
